The Book of John: A Kid-Friendly Summary

📖 The Gospel of John – Discovering Who Jesus Truly Is

The Book of John is the fourth book in the New Testament of the Bible. It was written by John, one of Jesus’ closest disciples and friends. But unlike Matthew, Mark, and Luke (called the “Synoptic Gospels”), John’s Gospel is very different.

Instead of simply telling us what Jesus did, John shows us who Jesus really isthe Son of God who came to give us eternal life. He wants everyone to know that Jesus is God in human form, sent to save the world and bring us into God’s family.

✨ Why Is John’s Gospel So Unique?

While Matthew and Luke tell us about Jesus’ birth, and all three Synoptic Gospels use many parables (short stories with lessons), John doesn’t do that in the same way.

Instead, John starts with something big and mysterious:

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.” (John 1:1)

John calls Jesus the Word — meaning Jesus is God’s message to the world, the one who shows us exactly who God is. Jesus existed from the very beginning and helped create the world!

🌟 John the Baptist and Jesus’ Early Ministry

Early in John’s Gospel, we meet John the Baptist — a man sent to prepare people’s hearts for Jesus. He pointed to Jesus and said:

“Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29)

Jesus then began gathering His disciples and performed His first miracle — turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana (John 2:1–11). This special sign showed His divine power and compassion for people’s needs, and it’s only recorded in John!

💡 The 7 Special “I AM” Sayings — Only in John!

One of the most unique parts of John is how Jesus reveals who He is through seven powerful “I AM” statements, connecting to God’s name in Exodus (“I AM who I AM”):

1️⃣ I am the Bread of Life — Jesus feeds our spiritual hunger.
2️⃣ I am the Light of the World — He guides us out of darkness.
3️⃣ I am the Gate — The way to God’s family.
4️⃣ I am the Good Shepherd — He lovingly cares for and protects us.
5️⃣ I am the Resurrection and the Life — He has power over death.
6️⃣ I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life — The only path to God.
7️⃣ I am the True Vine — We grow strong when connected to Him.

🎉 Fun Fact: These “I AM” sayings are found only in the Gospel of John!

🙏 Jesus Teaches About Eternal Life

John’s Gospel is also famous for teaching us how to have eternal life. One of the most loved verses in the Bible is here:

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16)

Jesus explains that faith in Him is the way to have a forever relationship with God — a life that doesn’t end, even after we die!

✨ Miracles of Jesus in John

John focuses on specific miracles to prove Jesus is the Son of God. Some of these powerful signs include:

✅ Healing a man born blind (John 9:1–12).
✅ Feeding 5,000 people with just a few loaves and fish (John 6:1–14).
✅ Raising Lazarus from the dead (John 11:1–44).

These miracles weren’t just amazing — they showed Jesus’ lovepower over naturevictory over death, and mission to bring hope.

🐑 The Good Shepherd and Jesus’ Teachings

While John doesn’t have as many parables as Matthew, Mark, and Luke, it still contains beautiful teachings in story form.

For example, in John 10:11–18, Jesus calls Himself the Good Shepherd:

“I am the Good Shepherd. The Good Shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.”

This image teaches us that Jesus loves us so much He gave up His life to save us, protecting us like a shepherd protects and cares for his sheep.

✝️ The Last Supper and Humble Service

Only John includes the moving moment when, during the Last Supper, Jesus washed His disciples’ feet (John 13).

He showed them what true humility and love look like. He said:

“Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14)

Jesus taught them (and us!) to serve one another with love.

🕊️ Jesus’ Death and Resurrection

The heart of John’s Gospel is the story of Jesus’ sacrifice. Jesus willingly died on the cross to take away the sins of the world.

But the story didn’t end there!

After three days, Jesus rose from the dead! This Resurrection shows His power over death and proves He truly is the Son of God. Through His death and rising again, He offers forgiveness and eternal life to everyone who believes.

👀 Jesus Appears to His Disciples

After rising from the dead, Jesus appeared to His disciples.

One famous moment in John is with Thomas, who doubted until he saw Jesus’ wounds. Jesus said:

“Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed.” (John 20:29)

This teaches us that faith means trusting Jesus even if we can’t see Him with our eyes today.
